The Willie Lynch Letter And The Making Of A Slave Is A Speech Given By Willie Lynch In 1712 On Control Of Slaves In The Colony To An Audience On The Bank Of The James River In Virginia. The Speaker, William Lynch, Is Alleged To Have Owned Slaves In The West Indies. He Was Summoned To Virginia In 1712, In Part Because The Region Had Had Many Slave Uprisings Before His Arrival.
And Much More So Because Of His Reputation As A Strict Slave Master And An Authoritarian. The Willie Lynch Letter Is A Description Of A Brief Speech Given By Willie Lynch, In Which He Informs Other Slave Owners That He Has Found The “Secret” Of Subduing Enslaved Africans By Inciting Them To Fight One Another.
This Document Has A Number Of Issues, Not The Least Of Which Being The Fact That It Is Wholly Bogus.
This Partially Explains Why I Was Initially Uninterested In The Now-famous William Lynch Speech: I Long Ago Quit Listening To Statements That Start With “The Issue With Black People Is,” Or Conclude With “And That’s Why Black People Can’t Get Ahead Anymore.”

The Musician Talib Kweli Laments In The Song “Know That,” And One Professor At A Midwestern Institution Made The Speech Essential Reading For Her Students. At Least Three Individuals Have Questioned Me About It In The Past Month, Which Suggests That Recently, Its Citations Have Been Happening More Frequently.
The Speech’s Introduction States That Master Lynch Gave A Lecture On The James River’s Bank Describing How To Keep Rebellious Employees Divided Because He Cared So Much About The Outcomes Of His Slave-holding Brethren In The American Colonies.
He Claimed That Age Should Be Contrasted With Youth, Darkness With Light, Men With Women, And So On. He Asserted That Such Divisive Methods “Will Dominate The Slaves For At Least 300 Years.” That Is Why It Appears That Black People Are Currently Unable To Advance.

It Would Essentially Be A Find Of A Lifetime. However, The Letter Was Never Actually “Found.” Instead, It Just “Emerged” Online, Avoiding The Formal Historical Channels And Into The Canon Of American Racial Conspiracies.
On A More Practical Level, The Speech Is Replete With Dubious, If Not Wholly Incorrect, Allusions. According To Lynch, He Received An Invitation At His “Modest Estate In The West Indies.” Although This Is Technically Possible—the Plantation System Was Well-established In The Caribbean By 1712—the Majority Of Plantation Owners Were Absentees Who Opted To Stay In The Colonial Nation, With Hired Managers And Overseers Managing The Day-to-day Operations Of Their Estates.
Even If Mr. Lynch Were An Exception To This Rule, The Majority Of The Wording Of His “Speech” Is Still Outdated. Lynch Frequently Uses The Term “Slaves,” Which Is Again Feasible, But It Is Much More Likely That People During This Era Would Simply Call Those Who Were In Bonds Of Servitude “Negroes.”
He Claims In The Opening Line That “Ancient Rome Would Envy Us If My Programme Is Implemented,” Although At The Time Of This Speech, The Word “Programme” Was Only Used To Refer To A Printed Notice For Theatre Events; It Did Not Enter The English Language With This Sense Until 1837.
Two Paragraphs Later, He States That He Would “Provide An Outline Of Action” For Slaveholders; The Word “Outline” Hadn’t Been Used In Its Current Sense Until 1759, Which Wasn’t Until It Had Been Used As An Artistic Term For A Sketch For Just 50 Years.
His Use Of The Words “Indoctrination” And “Self-refueling” In The Subsequent Phrase Is Much More Incriminating. A Century After The Alleged Date Of Lynch’s Statement, The First Term Didn’t Even Enter The Language Until 1811; The Second Didn’t Even Have Its Modern Meaning Until 1832.
More Explicitly, Lynch Used The Word “Black,” With An Uppercase “B,” To Denote African Americans More Than Two Centuries Before The Term Became Commonly Used To Define An Ethnic Group.
Lynch Has Also Been Mysteriously Attributed With Coining The Term “Lynching” In Some Well-known Quotations, Which Is Strange Considering That The Speech Pledges To Give Slave-holders Non-violent Methods To Save Them The Price Of Murdering Valued,
Though Rebellious, Livestock. This Error Highlights A More Fundamental Issue With How We Interpret American History: Although Racialized And Utilised To Maintain Social And Political Subordination, Violence Against Black People In America Was Not Unique.
The General Level Of Violence In Early America Was Quite High; This Was Partially Due To The Pervasive Violence In British Culture And Partly To The Brutality That Was Often Present In Frontier Civilizations. Lynching Was A Non-racial Phenomena For The Majority Of Its Existence; In Fact, It Was Most Frequently Committed Against White People. The Mob Violence Against Tories, Or British Loyalists, Immediately Following The American Revolution Gave Rise To The Name “Lynch Law.”
There Is Debate Over The Exact Origins Of The Phrase, With Some Linking It To Charles Lynch, A Justice-of-the-peace During The American Revolution Who Imprisoned Tories, While Others Believe It To Be The Legacy Of An Armed Militia Established Near The Lynche River Or The Militia Captain Named Lynch Who Established Judicial Tribunals In Virginia In 1776. Regardless Of The Precise Origins, There Is No Mention Of The Phrase Earlier Than 1768, More Than 50 Years After The Speech’s Stated Date.
Lynching Was Frequently Viewed As A Form Of Communal Justice In The Early Republic Due To The Lack Of Judicial Resources (Judges Were Required To Go From Town To Town Hearing Cases, Which Is Whence We Get The Word “Judicial Circuit”) And The High Incidence Of Property Offences.
The Term “Lynching” Wasn’t First Associated With African Americans Until The 1880s, After Reconstruction Came To An End; Over Time, The Number Of Black People Who Were Killed Each Year Began To Surpass That Of White People, Until By The End Of The Century, It Was Almost Exclusively Black People Who Were Being Killed. The Willie Lynch Lecture Seems To Provide An Accessible Justification For The Causes Of Our Much-lamented “Black Discord.” Similar Claims Could Be Made Regarding The Effects Of Historical Documents Like The 1845 Tract “Religious Instruction Of Negroes,” Which Was Written By A Presbyterian Minister Who Supported Slavery, Or The British Practise Of Mixing Various African Ethnic Groups On Slave Ships In Order To Hinder Communication And, Consequently, Insurrection.
But Even This Is Dubious Since It Assumes That White People, Or Any Other Diverse Group, Do Not Have To Deal With Sexism, Generational Divides, And Classism. Willie Lynch Provides No Justification For The White Pro-lifer Who Shoots A White Abortionist Or For Interpersonal Violence Between White People.
He Makes No Attempt To Understand The Political Disputes Between Various Latino Factions Or The Criminality In Asian Neighbourhoods. In The End, Black People Are No More Divided Than Any Other Group Of People And Far More Unified Than We Give Ourselves Credit For. Unity Is Not The Same As Unanimity.
