Rabindranath Tagore Biography, In English Project, In 350 Words, Life And Work, Assignment, Short Note, Autobiography PDF Free Download
On May 7, 1861, Rabindranath Tagore Was Born. His Family Had Relocated From Their Original Countries To Govindpur, One Of The Three Settlements That Subsequently Became Calcutta, Towards The End Of The Seventeenth Century. Through The Pursuit Of Commercial And Banking Operations, The Family Began To Accumulate Land And Significant Corporate Holdings Throughout Time. They Had Benefitted Greatly From The British East India Company’s Expanding Dominance.
Dwarkanath Tagore, Rabindranath’s Grandfather, Lived Luxuriously And Defied The Hindu Religious Restrictions Of The Time By Travelling To Europe, Much Like His Contemporaries, Rammohan Roy, The Nineteenth-century Social And Religious Reformer.
In 1828, Roy Established The Brahma Samaj Movement, A Religious Reform Movement. Roy’s Initiatives To Improve Hindu Society Were Backed By Rabindranath’s Grandparents. Dwarkanath Tagore’s Son, Devendranath Tagore, Joined The Brahma Samaj Movement As Well. In Order To Promote Its Growth, He Created A Meditation Centre And Guest House On Some Property Approximately 100 Miles From Calcutta Named ‘santiniketan,’ Or The Abode Of Peace, In 1863.
Despite Being Profoundly Rooted In Hindu And Islamic Traditions, Tagore’s Family Made Significant Contributions To The Adoption Of Western Education, Creating Institutions For The Study Of Science And Medicine. This Unusual Circumstance Explains The Blend Of Tradition And Experimentation That Came To Define Rabindranath Tagore’s Approach To Life.
Rabindranath’s Father Was A Major Person In Bengali Society’s Freshly Awakened Period. He Had Attended Rammohan Roy’s Anglo-hindu School At One Point And Had Been Strongly Inspired By Roy’s Demeanour, Values, And Religious Dedication. Devendranath Tagore Studied European Philosophy And, Although Being Passionately Devout, Did Not Embrace All Parts Of Hinduism.
He Would Have A Significant Impact On His Son’s Mental And Practical Views. Rabindranath Was His Parents’ Fourteenth Child. His Siblings Were Poets, Musicians, Playwrights, And Writers, Thus The Tagore Household Was Replete With Musical, Intellectual, And Theatrical Endeavours. The Family Was Also Active In A Variety Of National Initiatives. When Rabindranath Was Born, Significant Developments Were Taking Place In Bengal.
Iswar Chandra Vidyasagar Has Been Working To Improve The Status Of Women In Society. English-language Schools Were Being Developed Alongside Conventional Sanskrit-language Institutions. Vidyasagar Has Founded Bengali-medium Schools Across Bengal With Little Or No Government Backing. He Had Also Developed A Training Centre For Instructors For These Schools. Rabindranath Attended This Institution And Credits It With Instilling In Him A Passion Of Bengali Language And Literature. He Was Also Transferred To Many English-speaking Schools, But He Disliked Their Teaching Approach And Had No Desire To Be Educated In A Foreign Language.
When He Was Around 14 Years Old, He Progressively Dropped Out Of Formal Education. The Balance Of His Education Was Completed At Home Via His Own Efforts And With The Assistance Of Tutors In Different Areas. He Also Took Wrestling, Piano, And Painting Instruction From Experts. His Early Education Would Make A Lasting Influence On Him.
2 Rabindranath Was 12 Years Old When His Father Brought Him To Santiniketan, A Meditation Centre Founded In 1863. During Their Short Stay, Devendranath Taught His Son Sanskrit, Astronomy, And The Texts That Formed The Foundation Of His Reformed Faith. Rabindranath Was Allowed To Wander The Fields And Woods When These Teachings Were Completed.
This Habit Continued As The Father And Son Travelled On To Dalhousie In The Himalayan Foothills. After Studying Sanskrit, English Literature, And Religion, The Aspiring Poet Ventured Into The Highlands And Woods. Life In Close Contact To Nature Was Foreign To Him Amid Calcutta’s Metropolitan Environs.
Calcutta Also Lacked The Deep And Caring Link Between Instructor And Student That He Had Experienced When His Father Taught Him. Rabindranath Was Inspired To Build A School In Santiniketan In 1901 By His Childhood Experience As A Keen Learner Eagerly Following Teachings Delivered By His Father In The Style Of A Fine Teacher In Pleasant Circumstances.
When He Was 17, His Father Sent Him To London To Train For The Indian Civil Service Or As A Lawyer. He Passed His Matriculation Test And Subsequently Enrolled At University College London. He Grew To Appreciate His English Literature Studies And Was Exposed To British Social Life And Western Music, Both Of Which He Liked. However, He Abruptly Went Home After Eighteen Months Without Finishing His Degree. He Did, However, Get The Idea That Human Nature Was Potentially Universal.
Back In India, He Pursued His Own Education, Creative Writing, And Music. In 1882, He Published Sandhya Sangeet [evening Songs], A Collection Of Bengali Lyrics. He Had A Spiritual Experience Around This Time That Lead Him To Realise The Interconnectedness Of Everything That Exists And Himself As A Vital Part Of It. He Penned His Renowned Poem Nirjharer Swapna Bhanga [the Awakening Of The Fountain] The Same Year. He Became Aware Of His Extraordinary Potential As A Poet. Between 1884 And 1890, He Published Many Volumes Of His Poetry, As Well As Several Prose Essays, Critiques, Dramas, And Novels.
Tagore Married At The Age Of 23. Beyond His Literary Endeavours, He Had Started To Share His Father’s Religious Obligations At This Point. In 1890, He Made A Second Journey To The United Kingdom, But Returned After A Month To Manage The Family Holdings.
This Duty Provided Him With Fresh Sources Of Inspiration. Whereas His Earlier Creative Work Was Mostly Based On Imagination, He Now Had A Firsthand And Personal Understanding Of The Dreadful Existence Experienced By Impoverished Bengali Peasants.
This New Experience Inspired The Writing Of Galpaguccha a Bunch Of Stories And The Many Letters He Wrote To His Niece, Which Were Later Published As Chhinnapatra [torn Letters] And Chhinnapatravali [a Collection Of Torn Letters], Both Of Which Are Considered Landmarks In The Writing Of Bengali Prose And In Describing The Bengali Countryside.
Tagore Was Overwhelmed By The Peasants’ Economic, Social, And Political Distress. Later On, He Described Them As Follows:
Because The Average Guy Has Not Yet Comprehended His Condition, Our So-called Responsible Classes Live In Luxury. Because Of This, The Landlord Hits Him. The Moneylender Has Him In His Grip; The Foreman Abuses Him; The Cop Robs Him; The Priest Takes Advantage Of Him; And The Magistrate Grabs His Pocket.
3 He Believed That Appealing To The Religious Emotions Of The Landlord, Police Officer, Or Moneylender Would Not Improve The Situation. Need Is A Stronger Force In Human Civilization Than Generosity. The First Prerequisite Is For Individuals To Identify The Tie That Brings Them Together As Three A Society.
Education Is The Most Probable Method To Achieving This. Tagore Knew, Based On His Personal Observations Of Farmers’ Attitudes And Social Behaviour, That Strength Can Be Developed Only In A Self-sufficient Village Community That Develops Its Own Centre Of Power And Momentum Of Expansion.
Rabindranath Tagore, India’s Iconic Figure In Educational History, Was Dissatisfied With The Education System Prevalent At The Time, Leading Him To Isolate Himself From It. Tagore, While Being Born Into A Well-educated Family, Did Not Attend School And Instead Received His Education At Home. Despite Being Sent To England For Formal Education In 1878, He Dropped Out Halfway Through.
His Traditional Education Began In A Public School In Brighton, East Sussex, England. To Fulfil His Father’s Wish, He Went To England In 1878 To Study Law.
He Was Uninterested In Schoolwork And Later Enrolled At University College In London To Study Law, But He Dropped Out And Learned Shakespeare’s Works On His Own. He Also Studied English, Irish, And Scottish Literature And Music Before Returning To India And Marrying Mrinalini Devi.
He Afterwards Enrolled At The University College London, Where He Was Accepted To Study Law. However, He Abandoned His Studies Once Again And Studied A Number Of Shakespearean Plays On His Own. He Returned To India And Married Mrinalini Devi When She Was Just Ten Years Old, After Studying The Fundamentals Of English, Irish, And Scottish Literature And Music.
Still, As We All Know, He Disliked School And Returned Home After Two Years But Without A Degree. Even Though He Disliked School, He Was Often Found With Books, A Pen, And Ink. He Was Often Scribbling Things In His Notebook, But He Was Too Shy To Reveal His Writings.
