West Bengal Finance Minister, Chandrima Bhattacharya, unveiled the State budget for the financial year 2024-25, emphasizing social welfare, employment opportunities, and infrastructure development. While announcing numerous programs and schemes, she raised concerns about the Centre withholding funds due to the state, citing an alleged deprivation of citizens’ entitlements.
In her budget speech, Bhattacharya accused the Centre of denying West Bengal its rightful share under crucial rural development programs such as MGNREGA, Prime Minister Awas Yojna, Prime Minister Grameen Sadak Yojna, as well as other significant initiatives like the National Health Mission, 15th Finance Commission, and Food Subsidy. She stated that the Centre has withheld a total of ₹1.18 lakh crore that is rightfully owed to the state.
The proposed budget, amounting to ₹3.7 lakh crore, aims to address the diverse needs of the state’s populace, encompassing a range of sectors and demographics. For Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes communities, the assistance has been raised to ₹1,200, while for other categories, it has been increased to ₹1,000.
