Teddy Is The Young, Innocent Son Of The Colonial Family Living Inside The Bungalow That Rikki-tikki Protects. He Is The One Who Initially Finds Rikki-tikki In The Ditch After The Flood. Teddy Grows Especially Close To The Mongoose And Sleeps With Him On His Pillow Each Night. While Sitting At The Breakfast Table, Teddy Is Within Striking Distance Of One Of The Cobras When Rikki-tikki-tavi Attacks The Cobra To Protect The Family.

Teddy’s Mother And Father Fit The Archetypal Description Of A Mother And A Father. Teddy’s Father Knows A Great Deal About The Mongoose When Rikki-tikki-tavi First Arrives And Is Quick To Defend The Mongoose And The Family When They Come Under Attack By The Cobras.

On The Other Hand, Teddy’s Mother Is Very Unsure About Bringing What She Considers A Wild Animal Into Their Home And Allowing It To Sleep In Their Child’s Bed. She Faints When Teddy Is Nearly Bitten By The Cobra In The Second Attack And Eventually Comes To Appreciate Rikki-tikki’s Protection For Her Family.

Nag Is The Male Cobra Inhabiting The Garden Outside The Family’s Bungalow. Nag Is One Of The Antagonists Of This Short Story Simply Because He Goes To Battle With The Protagonist, Rikki-tikki. Nag Devotes A Great Deal Of Time Plotting The Attack And Death Of The Colonial Family And Has Successfully Frightened All The Other Animals In The Garden Into Submission. He Believes That If He Can Rid The Bungalow Of The Family, Nag, His Mate, And Their Eggs Could Safely Occupy The Bungalow.

Nagaina Is The Second Cobra That Lives In The Garden And Is Nag’s Mate. She Is Described As Wicked And Is Even More Intent On Harming Teddy And The Family Than Nag.

Nagaina Devises The Secret Attack Plan That Is Only Foiled When Rikki-tikki Overhears The Two Discussing Their Plan To Attack Teddy’s Father When He Is Unarmed. Nagaina Is The Second Antagonist Of This Short Story And Arguably The More Evil Of The Two Cobra Villains.

Rikki-tikki Makes Friends With Some Of The Animals In The Garden. There Are Two Cobras, Nag And Nagaina, Who Terrorize The Birds And Other Animals. Darzee, A Bird Who Lives In The Garden, And His Wife Have Lost One Of Their Fledglings To The Snakes.

Darzee Begs Rikki-tikki To Keep Them And Their Children Safe. Rikki-tikki Decides He Will Kill The Cobras, But First, He Kills Another Deadly Snake. It Is His First Kill, And His Family Are Impressed. He Is Hailed A Hero. This Only Makes Rikki-tikki Want To Kill Nag And Nagaina More. He Feels Responsible For The Safety Of The Family And The Garden Animals.

One Night, Nag And Nagaina Plot To Kill The Human Family. Nag Falls Asleep In The Bathroom While He Waits For The Man To Come In For His Morning Bath. Rikki-tikki Watches And Waits For The Right Moment, Then Attacks. The Mongoose Wins A Terrible Battle Against The Cobra. Teddy’s Father Shoots Nag In Two, Only After Rikki-tikki Has Killed Him, And Throws The Snake On The Trash Pile.

Rikki-tikki And Darzee’s Wife Make A Plan To Get Nagaina Away From Her Eggs. Darzee’s Wife Fakes A Broken Wing, Making A Racket To Distract The Cobra. Nagaina Leaves Her Nest Of Nearly-hatched Eggs And Begins To Chase The Bird. Rikki-tikki Kills The Unhatched Cobras And Darzee’s Wife Calls Out A Warning To Him. Thinking The Man Killed Her Husband, Nagaina Has Cornered The Entire Family On The Veranda.

Rikki-tikki Brings One Last Unhatched Egg And Taunts Nagaina. She Is Frantic And Begs For Her Baby Back. With The Snake Occupied, The Family Escapes. Rikki-tikki Knows That If He Does Not Kill Nagaina, Neither The Family, Nor The Garden Animals Will Ever Be Safe.

He Attacks And Chases Her Into Her Underground Den. Darzee Sings A Sad Song, Saying That Rikki-tikki Must Be Dead, For Nothing Can Beat A Cobra In Its Own Den. Rikki-tikki, However, Emerges Victorious, Announcing That Nagaina Will Not Return.

One Day, A Summer Flood Washes A Young Mongoose Named Rikki-tikki-tavi Away From His Family. He’s Found And Revived By A British Family Living In India. The Family Adopts The Orphaned Mongoose—or, More Accurately, He Decides To Stick Around. (Their Bungalow Is Pretty Swank.)

Naturally Curious And Adventurous, Rikki-tikki Explores The Family’s Garden The Next Day. There He Meets A Darzee, A Tailorbird Who Is Mourning His Baby Bird’s Death At The Hands (Er, Teeth) Of Nag. Rikki-tikki Asks Who Nag Is And Is Instantly Introduced To The Big, Black Cobra. He Also Meets Nag’s Wife Nagaina, So That’s Two Cobras For The Price Of One. Sweet!

Having Missed Their Chance At A Surprise Attack, The Cobras Just Slither Off, And Rikki-tikki Goes To Hang With Teddy, The British Family’s Son. But Teddy Gets A Wee Bit Too Close To The Poisonous Krait Snake, Forcing Rikki-tikki To Fight It. Not That He Wouldn’t Have Anyway. That’s What Mongooses Do, After All.

That Night, Nag And Nagaina Plan A Sneak Attack On The British Family, But They Haven’t Reckoned With Rikki-tikki. In The Ensuing Battle, Rikki-tikki Kills Nag, Saving The Family But Also Really Ticking Off Nagaina. The Next Day, Rikki-tikki Sets A Plan Into Motion To Get Rid Of The Cobras Once And For All. He Has Darzee’s Wife Act As Bait To Keep Nagaina Occupied (Classic Move). Then He Heads To The Cobra’s Nests And Goes Berserker On The Eggs.

But All Doesn’t Go According To Plan. Nagaina Sets Out To Kill Teddy, Forcing Rikki-tikki To Bring One Of Her Eggs As Leverage. In The Epic Clash Of Mammal-versus-reptile, Nagaina Manages To Snatch Up Her Egg And Flees Into Her Den. Rikki-tikki Gives The Old Girl Hot Pursuit, While Darzee Mourns The Loss Of Rikki-tikki. No One Goes Into A Cobra’s Den And Lives.
