The Ministry Of Tourism Will Take The Indian Railway Catering And Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) Cooperation To Promote The Tourism Industry. On The Demand Of Tourists, IRCTC Will Also Run Special Trains For New Tourist Places. It Aims To Harness The Potential Of The Tourism Sector And Leverage The Core Strength Of Tourism Sector Professionals In Tourism Activities Such As Marketing, Hospitality Sector, Integration Of Services, Liaison With The Customer Base, And Expertise In The Identification And Development Of Tourism Circuits.

Railways and Tourism – Milestones

1.On 19 March 2014, nearly 5,80,000 tickets booked in a day.
2.On 1 April 2015, Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) created a new national record with 13,45,496 tickets booked in a day.
3.On 2 April 2015, nearly 11,00,000 tickets booked in a day.
4.In April 2015, nearly 13,40,000 tickets booked in a day.
5.The inauguration of Tejas Express was on 24 May 2017 from Mumbai CST to Karmali, Goa.
6.Extension of Scheme of Alternate Train Accommodation System aka VIKALP for the benefit of Waitlisted Passengers with effect from 1 April 2017 in all Mail/Express trains.
7.From 3 November 2017, Service started to provide information to passengers through (SMS) regarding status of delayed trains. Initially, all Rajdhani, Shatabdi, Tejas & Gatiman Trains covered. From 15 December 2017, all Jan shatabdis, Duranto and Garib Rath trains have also been included. Now this service is available in around 250 trains.
8.On 4 October 2019, started operating India’s first semi-private train “Tejas” between Lucknow and Delhi.
9.On 17 January 2020, started operating second semi-private train ”Tejas” between Mumbai and Ahmedabad.
10.On 16 February 2020, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated first semi-private Train ”Kashi Mahakaal” (3rd semi-private by IRCTC) between Varanasi and Indore connecting 4 Jyotirlingas of Lord Shiva.
11.In 7 August 2019, IRCTC launched a payment wallet names iMudra, to provide an easy way to book railway tickets, pay, send or withdraw money.
12.On 31 December 2020 IRCTC launched its new upgraded  e-Ticketing Website & Mobile App for booking of online Railway Ticket.

Railways and Tourism Special Trains

  • Mahaparinirvan Express

As the name suggests, it is a special train on a popular Buddhist circuit, operated by Indian Railways in association with Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation. It offers an all inclusive one week package covering major destinations related to the life of Lord Buddha like Budhgaya, Rajgir, Nalanda, Varanasi, Sarnath, Kushinagar, Lumbini, Sravasti & Agra,  with flexibility to modify the packages in case of group bookings. While the operation of the train is undertaken by the Railways, the on-board / off-board services, marketing, etc. is managed by Indian Railways Catering and Tourism Corporation Ltd.

  • Bharat Darshan Train

The Bharat Darshan trains envisage taking a number of tourists from a particular region and taking them to tourist destinations in other regions of the country at an economic cost. The destinations are mainly of historic, religious and other tourism importance. The trains operate on a number of different itineraries across the country. The itinerary also keeps on changing from time to time. The package includes rail travel, road transfer, meals, accommodation as well as sightseeing and comes at an affordable cost.  While the operation of the train is undertaken by the Railways, the on-board / off-board services, ticketing, etc. is managed by Indian Railways Catering and Tourism Corporation Ltd.

  • Punj Takht Train

As an endeavor to facilitate rail travel to important places of Sikh pilgrimage, this train connects the five lakhs at Amritsar, Aanadpur Saheb, Bhatinda, Nanded, and Patna and offers all-inclusive package covering train journey, accommodation, local transport meals, etc. at an affordable rate. While the operation of the train is undertaken by the Railways, the on-board / off-board services, ticketing, etc. is managed by Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation Ltd.   • Steam Train

A Steam train between Delhi to Alwar and back operate fortnightly during the winter months. The operation of the train is undertaken by the Railways; the on-board services, ticketing, etc. is managed by the Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation, and off-board services at Sariska is managed by the Rajasthan Tourism Development Corporation.
